Abstract

Banana (Musa paradisiaca) is one of the most important oldest cultivated horticultural crops grown almosteverywhere in India which is rich source of phytochemicals, minerals, carbohydrates, proteins and phenolic compounds.Ney Poovan variety of banana pseudo stem sap was used for finishing of excel and cotton fabrics. The banana pseudo stemsap was boiled for 30min and 60min and optimized using colour spectrophotometer. The 30 min boiled BPS exhibitedmaximum colour strength as compared with pure and 60min boiled BPS. The excel and cotton fabrics were finished with30 min boiled BPS in varied concentrations (20, 40 and 60%) and assessed for colour strength, reflectance and colourdifference. The 60 per cent BPS finished cotton and excel fabric exhibited greater colour strength followed by 40 and20 per cent finished fabrics which showed better dye uptake and colour yield. It can be concluded that, optimum utilizationof banana pseudo stem sap for textile colouration and functional finishing became the effective means for value addition torenewable bioresources.
