Characterization of soil pedons of Ukkund-1 micro-watershed of Ranebennur taluk, Haveri district
Abstract
A study was undertaken to characterize the soil pedons of Ukkund-1 micro-watershed of Ranebennur taluk, Haveri district of Karnataka. 12 profiles were studied for the morphological, physical and chemical properties. The soildepth of each pedon ranged between shallow to deep. In dry conditions, surface horizons were slightly hard, while subsurfacelayers were very hard. Under wet and moist conditions, the surface horizons exhibited moderate stickiness, plasticity and a friable nature, whereas the sub-surface horizons were very sticky, very plastic and firm. Horizon wise soilsamples were collected from 12 pedons based on soil heterogeneity and analyzed for pedon morphology, physical andchemical properties. Soil texture varied from clay loam to clay and structure varied from sub-angular blocky to angularblocky. Bulk density increased with depth. The pH ranged from slightly acidic to slightly alkaline and EC was normal. Organic carbon (OC) content decreased with depth. Conversely, free CaCO3 content increased with depth.
